The northern areas reward patience more than planning. Weather closes roads, mountains hide behind cloud for days, and then one morning everything clears at once and you understand why people keep coming back.
What to expect
Distances here are measured in hours, not kilometres. A journey that looks like ninety minutes on a map can take four, and that is normal rather than a sign something has gone wrong. Build slack into every day.
Carry more water than feels sensible, more layers than the forecast suggests, and cash — card machines are unreliable outside Gilgit.
