A startlingly turquoise lake formed by a landslide in 2010.
In January 2010 a landslide dammed the Hunza river and drowned several villages and twenty kilometres of the Karakoram Highway. What was left is a lake of an almost implausible turquoise, now with a rebuilt highway running above it through Chinese-built tunnels.
It is a strange place — genuinely beautiful, and the result of a disaster that displaced thousands of people. Both things are true and the local guides will tell you so.
