Rakaposhi stands 7,788 metres above the Hunza valley and holds a record more impressive than its rank: it has the greatest uninterrupted vertical rise on earth, climbing about 5,800 metres from the Hunza river to the summit in roughly eleven horizontal kilometres.
Its name means 'snow covered' in the local Shina; in Burushaski it is Dumani, mother of mist. The Ghulmet viewpoint sits directly beneath the south face, right on the Karakoram Highway, and there is a small cafe there that serves the view with tea. Two hours from us, and worth the whole day.
